Session after legislative session, a bill to put casino gambling before Texas voters comes before the Legislature, only to be shot down.

This year, the recession means the odds are possibly better than ever for the Legislature to approve a gambling bill, said state Rep.

Mike Hamilton, R-Mauriceville.

Hamilton, co-author of a house joint resolution to create a Texas Gaming Commission and allow casino gambling, acknowledged economics could sway some legislators to vote in favor of the bill.

"I think (they) might," he said. "Once you get the budget and see if your district is hurting or not, that could influence folks."

After that, it's in the voters' hands, and if sufficient ballots are cast, casinos could open their doors in Texas.
