The Asian Pacific Legal Center is representing employees who claim they have been discriminated against by management at Club One, the casino denies the
Toney Johnson was visibly emotional when talking about being fired from club one.
He claims was wrongfully terminated because of his age, after working there for 50 years.
“But now with the economy the way it is, it’s hard to get a job,” said Johnson.
According to former club one employees the discrimination started when Kyle Kirkland bought the casino in 2008. Bee Vang is former Club One dealer; he says his hours were cut from full time to one day a week because of his ethnicity.
“Kyle Kirkland himself said that you can teach a dog how to deal, but not teach us how to smile,” said Vang.
Vang claims a total of 25 Hmong employees received the same types of cuts to their hours on the same day and Hmong employees were replaced with Caucasian dealers in high profile tournaments.
“They say my colleagues and I didn't know how to deal and couldn't speak proper English,” said Vang.
“Club ones position is that they are not going to comment on personnel matters,” said Mike Dages, a Spokesman for Club One.
Via a phone interview the attorney for club one did say that the casino denies all of the allegations and added that club one employs 325 people, of which 40% are over the age of 40. And a total of 58 employees are older than 50. He also said 45% of the employees are Asian.
The plaintiffs in these lawsuits are seeking monetary and punitive damages.
