Postal Service Issues Statue Of Liberty Stamp -- With Wrong Statue Of Liberty - TPM LiveWire

Is there anything more iconically American than Lady Liberty? How about the statue's replica at Las Vegas' New York-New York hotel and casino.

Turns out the U.S. Postal Service accidentally used the latter as the design for a new set of stamps, the New York Times reports. And they're sticking with

it.

"We still love the stamp design and would have used the photograph anyway," USPS spokesman Roy Betts told the Times.

The picture used as inspiration for the stamp came from a photo wire service. A "clever stamp collector" discovered the error, and contacted Linn's Stamp News -- a weekly stamp newspaper. The USPS says it's now "re-examining" its process to "prevent this situation from happening in the future."

MGM Resorts International spokesman Gorden Absher is thrilled: "Everyone thought the post office was honoring just one great American institution when in reality they were honoring two -- the Statue of Liberty and Las Vegas," he told the Times.

But former New York Mayor Ed Koch doesn't see it that way: "It simply means the post office is doing a stupid thing," he said.

Here's a picture of the stamp:
