ALBANY — An effort by Gov. Cuomo to take political cash out of the state’s new casino industry has mysteriously died.
When Cuomo submitted a bill to expand gambling in the state to the legislature several weeks ago, it included a provision prohibiting companies that want to open casinos from making campaign contributions.

But the language was quietly stripped out of the final version of the bill that passed the Legislature. Assembly spokesman Michael Whyland said it was the Senate that opposed the ban. Sen. John Bonacic (R-Orange County) argued during the debate last week that limiting political donations raises constitutional issues.
Bill Mahoney, of the New York Public Interest Research Group, criticized the move, saying it will open a stampede of giving.
