NORWALK, Conn. – A man who was stabbing passengers on a casino tour bus was shot to death by a Connecticut state trooper, closing northbound Interstate 95 in Norwalk for seven hours early Wednesday.

The unidentified man began attacking passengers around 10 p.m. Tuesday on the bus, headed from Chinatown in New York City to a Connecticut casino, state police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance said. Two passengers were stabbed, and another person suffered non-life threatening injuries when a bullet from the officer's gun ricocheted off the pavement.

The bus was carrying about 24 passengers and several people called 911. The driver pulled over at a construction site along I-95 and flagged down a trooper. Troopers have been present there for months as overpasses are replaced.

The trooper was aware of the situation when he approached the bus, Vance said in a statement. The trooper encountered the suspect, who was armed with a cutting instrument and injuring himself. When the trooper approached, the stabber began to be aggressive toward the trooper, refused an order to disarm, and advanced with the cutting instrument, forcing the trooper to shoot, Vance said.

The man died at Norwalk Hospital, a quarter-mile away. The injured also were taken to the hospital.

The trooper wasn't injured.

I-95 closed in Connecticut between Exits 12 and 15 overnight. Police had on-ramps closed and cruisers parked on overpasses. Traffic stretched to the south for miles as traffic made its way onto Route 1.

Shortly before 5 a.m., a heavy duty tow truck hoisted the front end of the tour bus. I-95 northbound was empty for several exits, as traffic was diverted off near the Darien town line. Around 5:30 a.m., the road was reopened.

The State Police Central District Major Crime Squad, assisted by the State's Attorney's Office, is investigating.
