Arizona to block approval of new Tohono O'odham casino

PHOENIX — Arizona's gaming director has told a Tucson-area Indian tribe building a casino in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale that he will block any certification of the new operation.

Gaming Department Director Daniel Bergin told the Tohono O'odham Nation in a letter last week that he would block the casino. His letter said the tribe has perpetrated fraud on the state, other tribes with casinos and the state's voters.

Gov. Doug Ducey urged Bergin to block the casino, the Arizona Republic reports.

The tribe has been fighting a legal battle for five years to build the casino and has won every round. The state and other tribes say the state compact doesn't allow another casino in metro Phoenix.

Tribal chairman Ned Norris Jr. called the latest's state roadblock a "new low."
