Not realizing he was being followed, a 43-year-old gambler hailed a cab about 5 a.m. and headed for home in high spirits.
It was there in the 2800 block of South Mildred Street that an armed man in a mask approached and demanded the man's winnings, according to his family and police. No charges had been filed by Saturday evening, police said.
The robbers, both 23, took off with everything in the man's pockets, including his wallet and iPhone 5c, according to the victim's family. The man was not injured.
Police were able to track the robbers using the iPhone's location and found a vehicle matching that description in the casino area.
At least one man was cornered in a SugarHouse bathroom, police said.
SugarHouse winners have been marked for robberies in the past. In 2012, a string of at least 10 holdups occurred, many following a similar pattern. In those robberies, police said, the victims were followed home and robbed of amounts from $3,000 to $18,500.
Surveillance video at that time documented the apparent scheme. In at least five robberies, a man would act as the spotter and watch people cash out. The spotter would relay his targets by cellphone to other men who carried out the robberies. In one case the robbers Tasered a pregnant woman, who had to be hospitalized.
