Driver rescued from casino bus dangling from bridge

A Mishawaka-based charter bus driver's condition is unknown after he drove over the side of a bridge early Sunday morning at Majestic Star Casino.

Gary Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Tom Decanter said Sunday that the Royal Excursion driver, whose name hasn't been released pending investigation, was driving north through the Buffington Harbor complex at about 5:30 a.m. when he missed a turn and got on a section of road still under construction. He drove off the edge of a bridge portion, but instead of going over the side, the bus caught on the edge of road.

Gary firefighters were called in to extract the man from the dangling bus, and it took an hour for them to get him out safely, Decanter said. He was taken to Methodist Hospital's Northlake campus.

The driver was the only person on the bus at the time, Decanter said.

"We're thankful he's alive," he said.

Majestic Star Casino spokesperson Chareice White confirmed the accident and said the casino administration is waiting to hear back on the man's condition.

Traffic investigators are still on the scene, Decanter said.
