Poll: What's the best spot for a casino in Newark?

NEWARK — If Newark and Essex County officials have it their way, a casino will be headed to Brick City before the year is out.

The dream is far from a done deal, but that has not stopped conversations with potential developers about building a gambling venue within the city.

On Thursday, we offered three potential landing spots for the casino in Newark: Riverfront Stadium, a downtown lot across from the Prudential Center, and a vacant 19-acre lot in the Ironbound District that used to be home to a movie theater.

The speculation got NJ.com readers thinking, and many took to the site to share their opinions on the possible destinations. Some offered potential homes for the casino outside of Brick City, such as Mahwah and Hoboken, but opinions were split on options within the city's boundaries.

User oldtimer was in favor of Riverfront Stadium, calling it "the best option" of the three presented. However, he said significant work would be needed on Route 21 to handle the new influx of visitors.

"I'd rather see market rate housing with retail and a museum near Prudential Center, not a casino," he wrote.

Mulberry Street and Edison Place was the front-runner for 999joe, who said it just might be able to save the $34 million stadium down the road.

"Ironbound is to inaccessible and keep the stadium because a casino may revive it. Just my opinion," he said.

User Hawk-o seconded the sentiments, calling Mulberry and Edison "perfect."

"Lets get this done!!!" Hawk-o wrote.
