A former poker dealer and six gamblers from across metro Detroit are facing criminal charges for allegedly running a cheating scheme at Detroit's MotorCity Casino that allowed losers to walk away with money.

The losers, authorities say, were the gamblers who were in cahoots with the dealer and stole from the casino with his help. Three of the gamblers are Detroiters. The others are from Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield and Melvindale.

According to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, whose office is prosecuting the group, the central figure in the alleged scheme is the ex-poker dealer, Darryl Green, 53, of Detroit, who is accused of making payouts on losing bets,  or simply not collecting payment on lost bets. This happened during 2014, though Schuette said Green knew the six gamblers who were in on the scheme before the cheating was discovered, and associated with them afterward as well.

According to Schuette, the casino suspected foul play of some sort  and asked the Michigan State Police to conduct an investigation, triggering the eventual felony charges against Green and the following:

Eugene Davis Jr., 32; Earl Leonard Railey, 65; and Calvin Lawrence Pullom, 47, all of Detroit.

Roxanna Dee McKinney, 49, of Farmington Hills

Leah Katrelle Smith, 42, of Melvindale

Hayword Milton Stampley, 57, of West Bloomfield.

Each person faces:

  • One count of conspiracy to cheat at a gambling game, a five-year felony;
  • One count of gambling activities, a 10-year felony;
  • One count of conspiracy to commit larceny in a building, a four-year felony;
  • One count of larceny in a building, a four-year felony.

Five of the defendants turned themselves in in recent weeks and have been arraigned in 36th District Court. They are: Green, Davis, Pullom, Stampley and Smith. All have been released on bond.

Two of the defendants -- Railey and McKinney -- are habitual offenders and remain wanted by the  State Police.

The five arraigned defendants are due in court for a preliminary examination on March 1.
