Tribe to break ground on resort casino south of Boston | Local News

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is breaking ground on a resort casino south of Boston.

The federally recognized tribe has scheduled a kick off ceremony for Tuesday morning at an industrial park in Taunton that's the future site of its First Light Resort and Casino.

The Cape Cod-based tribe is developing the estimated $1 billion project with the Genting Group, a Malaysia-based company signed on to operate the casino.

The tribe envisions a sprawling complex with a casino, three hotel towers, retail stores, restaurants and a water park. The property is part of the tribe's newly designated federal reservation.

The project is expected to open in part by 2017. It represents Massachusetts' third resort casino in development: MGM is building one in Springfield and Wynn has another in the Boston area.
