Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem has run Pennsylvania's most lucrative table games floor for nearly five years, but one look at its revenues for October raises an interesting question: Did someone win a bundle at the table?
Figures released Thursday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board show that Sands raked in $16.8 million in October on games such as blackjack, roulette and craps. That's easily tops among the state's 12 casinos, but it's a nearly $2 million decrease from last October and a rare drop for a casino that just announced a $90 million expansion because its table games revenues are so strong.
Short of Sands releasing information that it's not required to divulge, it's impossible to know what caused that, but there is one likely culprit.
"Someone probably won a lot of money at their tables," said Richard McGarvey, the gaming board's spokesman. "We'll never really know, but there isn't another obvious explanation. It's the nature of table games. Unlike slot machines, they can have big variances based on how much people win."
For a casino that led the state last year with $217 million in revenues last year, the October drop is a blip on the balance sheet – one likely to be made up in the coming months.
For this year, its October take was part of the good month statewide in which casinos collectively pulled in $71.2 million at the tables – a 5.4 percent increase over last year. Sands lead the pack, followed by $12.8 million for Parx Casino in Bucks County, $10.7 for SugarHouse in Philadelphia and $6.3 million for Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
Mount Airy Casino in Monroe County recorded $3.8 million in table games revenues.
The collective table games revenue statewide generated $11.5 million in tax money.
Combined with the $263 million in slot machine revenues recorded statewide, casinos pulled in a total of $334 million, which was about a 1 percent decrease over October 2015.
Earlier this week, Sands officials announced a $90 million casino expansion that will add 81 tables and 370 slot machines. Construction is expected to begin as early as January.
