Construction is coming along on a new casino in the midstate.

Hollywood Casino York, which is being constructed at the York Galleria Mall in Springettsbury Township, York County is expected to open towards the end of this year, according to Penn National Gaming spokesperson Jeff Morris.

In 2019, Hollywood Casino told the Gaming Control Board of Commissioners that it would have 500 slot machines (with as many as 750), 24 table games (with as many as 40 table games), a sportsbook, casual dining, bar and entertainment facilities in the 80,000-square-foot facility.

And plans for Hollywood Casino York and Hollywood Casino Morgantown, another casino that Penn National is building along the turnpike may not be the same when the casinos do open as delays in construction giving officials more time to plan.

“We have utilized this additional time to reimagine our offerings at these properties and will have more information to share in the coming months,” Morris said in an e-mail.

The casino is considered a mini-casino, called a Category 4 casino. Mini casinos became legalized in Pennsylvania in 2017.

The casino is being built on the site of the former Sears store at the York Galleria Mall, which has more than 50 tenants including Boscov’s Marshalls and Gold’s Gym. But in recent years, Bon-Ton, JCPenney and Sears all closed their doors at the mall and the mall has around 40 vacancies.

Hollywood Casino York is owned by Penn National Gaming, which also owns Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in East Hanover Township.

Hollywood Casino York won’t be the first casino to be built at a mall in Pennsylvania. Last year, Live! Casino Pittsburgh opened on the site of a former Bon-Ton store at the Westmoreland Mall in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County near Greensburg, approximately 30 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. That mini-casino has around 750 slots machines, 30 live-action table games, a sportsbook and a 22,000-square-foot sports restaurant, gaming venue and social lounge.
