Thoughts on the proposed casino

Concerning the proposed casino which is moving forward after Wednesday’s meeting: What do Laurie and Andy Sanborn care about? Are you concerned about the huge increase in traffic congestion that will result from this venture? Making an already congested and accident prone area even more dangerous? They don’t care. How about the environmental impact of new construction so close to sensitive wetland areas on the edge of the largest tract of undeveloped land in Concord? Are you concerned? They don’t care. Then there’s the wastefulness of erecting a new structure when a stone’s throw away sits a huge, dead mall. That seems to be a much better choice for a new casino if there has to be one. Again, they don’t care.

Next, when you consider the demographic of casino gamblers, and you realize that people who are the least able to afford gambling are the ones partaking in it: Are you concerned about the potential increase in homeless residents that this casino may cause? Laurie and Andy don’t care. There is also the seedy aspect to the gambling industry. Do you care about the reputation of Concord, and are you concerned with it becoming Pottersville? They don’t care. And finally, what about the fact that there won’t be much of a tax revenue boost from this establishment, which will be written off as “charitable gambling?” Do you care about Concord’s tax base? Laurie and Andy don’t seem to.
