Maryland casinos rake in $66.5 million in June

Maryland's four casinos rolled large in June, pulling in about $66.5 million in revenue, far exceeding state officials estimates for the year, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced Friday.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, the casinos tallied nearly $608.4 million in revenue, $76.84 million more than the Board of Revenue Estimates' projected.

"We are pleased that, during this past fiscal year, the goal has not only been met but the program has exceeded expectations," said Gov. Martin O'Malley in a statement.

The June figures offer the first year-over-year comparison for Maryland Live Casino, which opened in June 6, 2012. The Anne Arundel casino generated $51.4 million last month from table games and slot machines.

That's 80.5 percent more than a year ago. However, a year earlier, the casino wasn't open the entire month plus it had 3,171 slot, compared to 4,314 today. Maryland Live also added 122 table games in April.

"The revenues are in line with our projections and we're very pleased with our results," said Robert J. Norton, Matyland Live's president and general manager.

Besides Marylanders, the one-year old casino has attracted regular customers from Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and as far away as the Carolinas, he said.

"Our draw is quite strong," said Norton, adding that the site benefits from 5,000 hotel rooms in the vicinity plus its proximity to the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Norton said Maryland Live expects its annual revenue to grow by a double-digit percentage in the next fiscal year. The facility will open 52 poker tables on Aug. 28th , and casino expects that these tables along with the addition of poker tournaments will bring in gamblers from even farther away.

Hollywood Casino Perryville continues to see its revenue numbers slide with competition from other casinos. The casino's revenue from slot machines and table games totaled $7.78 million in June, down from about $7.98 million from slots a year earlier. The Cecil County casino is home to 1,158 slots machines and 22 table games.

Revenue rose at the Casino at Ocean Downs, reaching $4.8 million last month, or 9.4 percent more than a year ago. The Worcester County casino operates 800 slot machines.

Rocky Gap Casino and Resort, which opened in May in Western Maryland, generated $2.48 million last month. It runs 558 slot machines and 10 table games.
